La Befana es una típica figura del folclore de algunas partes de Italia. Su nombre deriva de la palabra epifanía, a cuya festividad religiosa está unida la figura de la Befana. Pertenece por tanto a las figuras folclóricas, repartidoras de regalos, vinculadas a las festividades navideñas.
La leyenda sostiene que la Befana visita a los niños la noche anterior a la epifanía (6 de enero) para rellenar los calcetines, colgados a tal fin por los niños esa noche, si han sido buenos con caramelos y chocolates, en cambio si han sido malos los rellena de carbón (formado en realidad por dulces de color y forma parecida al carbón). A menudo la Befana es descrita como una anciana, que vuela sobre una escoba. A diferencia de una bruja suele estar sonriente y tiene una bolsa o un saco lleno de dulces, regalos, pero también de carbón.
La distribución de regalos a los niños en nombre de la Befana fue fuertemente animada por el Fascismo, en el ámbito de la obra de "romanización" de la península italiana.
